A Fat-Blasting Workout Using Just ONE Piece of Equipment
by Shin Ohtake on Tuesday, June 09, 2009 • 32 Comments
If you have access to a fully equipped gym, it’s makes it a lot easier to change up your workouts and keep things fresh, but it shouldn’t make or break whether you can achieve your fitness goals or not! Getting in great shape can be done anywhere and with anything. Just a little creativity and a little know how, and you can create a workout that will rev up your metabolism to burn the fat and get you lean.
I recently got an email from April in Columbus, Ohio…
Hey Shin, I’m a mother of 3 and am just getting back into working out again. For now, I’m working out at home and the only piece of equipment I have is a medicine ball. Is it possible for me to do a full-body workout using just the this ball? Is it enough to get my heart rate up, burn fat and get me back in shape?
Thanks,
April
Columbus, OH
Believe it or not, you can do a lot with just a medicine ball! Watch the video below for a quick and effective medicine ball workout that you can do to get your heart rate up. You’ll use your entire body and activate your core for a stronger and leaner midsection.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a medicine ball - you can substitute it with a dumbbell (or almost anything you can imagine).
These are just some of the exercises you can do using a medicine ball, and there are many more exercises. But no matter what equipment you’re using, the most important factors to keep in mind are to include full body movements and to perform each exercise with intense effort. Using your entire body is much more functional and recruits more muscles, which means you burn more calories. And when you perform these exercises with intense effort, your body produces fat burning and lean muscle building hormones, so you can lose weight and get toned all over. So the next time you’re exercising, keep those factors in mind and get the most out of each workout.
If you had to pick only one piece of gym equipment, what would it be? Post your comments below!
And remember, if you have any questions that you want me to write about or make a video about, contact me and be sure to put “ARTICLE SUGGESTION” in the subject line of your email.

Hey Shin,
Kettlebell, kettlebell, kettlebell…I cannot believe the results that i am getting with my kettlebell. For the first time in years ‘I look different’ I have not picked up a dumbell/barbell for months, as i cannot walk past the kettlebell without picking it up and throwing it around.
Minimal equiptment, maximum results.
I have your kettlebell e-book, and love doing the routines, have you got anymore tips or tricks!!

Hello Shin.
Just saw your video with the medicine ball. Great moves with it. I will try to get my wife involved in exercising more. The one thing I would use and still have is the dumbells. They do not have to be large to get results, and they are easy to cary with you.

We did 12 reps on each side of every exercise twice through using a 5Kg ball last night ~ what a workout!! I’m feeling every muscle this morning, talk about a full body work out - i will definitely be adding this to my routine! :0)
Brilliant! thanks Shin!

Hi Shin, these exercises are excellent to do. the ball is a great challenge. Just one question what are the best exercises to tone the inner and outer thigh without using those “isolated” leg machines! Look forward to the next demonstration.
Posted by Jon on 06/16 at 02:58 PM
Love your workouts Shin! They’re quick, challenging and it doesn’t require me to go to a gym for machines.
Also to answer your question, if I were to use just one piece of equipment it would be a set of dumb bells.

Hey Shin, I think your workout using the ball is great. I’ve tried it daily over the last few days and am feeling the results. I’m always looking for simple workouts that raise the pulse without stuffing badly worn knees like jogging. Keep it coming mate!

Wow, what a difference one switched workout during the week is. After doing this work out as a little change (from the scheduled max workout)- my muscles were very confused and feel great. I felt this was a great ab workout as well as an all body workout. Even thought his program gives great muscle confusion changes-changing up another workout on my own making a mental change really helped. Thanks!

Wow - you make it look so easy - will try a few of your exercises and see how I go - thank you for encouraging me in your video shots because it does help when you are actually doing the exercises yourself and not having them all written down. great stuff

Hi Shin, Really miss ya! Just wanted to mention I have done both the Med Ball & Beach workout at The gym ( the one that starts with an “E” ) And I had at least 4 people ask me about the workouts. And many more were watching what I was doing. Hope all is well with you and Susan. I’ll stay in touch.
Take care,
Dorreen
